Ter Hooge Castle, a 13th-century landmark in Middelburg, is one of the oldest country estates on Walcheren. Once home to noble families such as Van Borssele and transformed into an elegant residence in 1754, the castle embodies a rich architectural heritage with Renaissance and Baroque influences. Despite wartime damage, restoration efforts have preserved its historical significance.
Since 2020, Peter de Vries—an expert in monument restoration and owner of Architectuur en Stedenbouw D. Bak en Partner Edam—has collaborated with Allard Architecture on various restoration projects, including Ter Hooge Castle.
We are pleased to share that the restoration initiative has received a sponsorship, reinforcing our commitment to safeguarding this cultural landmark. Additionally, we have completed and submitted an application requesting subsidization for conservation, further supporting the long-term preservation of the Ter Hooge Castle. Our efforts align with the broader initiative to secure a ruling that ensures the monument remains protected, allowing it to continue telling its story. By advocating for sustainable preservation, we aim to set a precedent for how historical sites can embrace modern needs without compromising their essence.
Ter Hooge Castle stands as a symbol of resilience, history, and future-forward conservation—one that Allard Architecture is proud to support.
