Saudi Arabia has strong traditions, which include the segregation of genders and strict family gender roles. For this project, allard architecture was asked to design a family home which would break free from these traditions while still respecting them. The design of the house follows modern principles and maintains an open minded approach towards Saudi customs. The well known city walls of Al-Diriyah inspired the traditional Arab facade, from which a new aesthetic style is derived. The rooms near this typical Arab façade are service-based, however, the dome focuses on an open gallery and ceiling which breaks the traditional style. The climax is found when you reach the middle of the dome and your attention is drawn to towards the light, helping to clear the mind and exhibiting this novel view of Saudi traditions.
