Allard Architecture was commissioned to design a small but carefully considered intervention - a subtle glass extension, including a new steel staircase, to connect the historic front house with the rear annex. Previously, the double-storey rear section was only accessible via a second staircase from the ground floor, resulting in an impractical layout for residential use.

The intervention introduces a contemporary staircase enclosed within a transparent glass volume, carefully inserted into the narrow ‘tussendeel’ between the historic front house and the rear building. Working within the existing zoning constraints, limited footprint, and differing floor levels, the addition creates a light-filled vertical connection that improves circulation and strengthens the relationship between the different parts of the home. The terrazzo floor finish in the ‘tussendeel’ further reinforces the legibility of the three distinct building components, now connected through this new circulation route.

The design responds to the needs of a growing family while preserving the monumental character of the front house. The result is a precise and respectful architectural intervention that seamlessly bridges heritage and modern living.
