Voorhout is a small town based in one of the famous flower farms of the Netherlands, where the small built structures are surrounded by colorful agricultural landscapes.
In order to maintain this special aesthetic and prevent urban sprawl, densification of the existing towns and villages is essential. Our master plan strategy for Voorhout incorporates the existing train line axis that runs through the centre and forms a point of interaction between the existing main shopping street and a new market square.
A ‘green ribbon’ is brought into the town along the railway line, where a buffer zone lined with trees acts as a natural sound absorber. This partially raised green zone allows for parking beneath, accommodating around 250 cars. Built structure is then offset parallel to this green ribbon in order to create a solid boundary and enclosure for the remaining of the site. The new built structures are incorporated onto the existing site in such a way that increases the dialogue between the existing town and the market square, all the while providing suitable spaces for retail and residences.
