program: community centre, islamic religion centre
design: allard architecture
Designed as part of a larger development on the Zeeburgerpad, Allard Architecture’s Islamic Centre in the Amsterdam East would serve Amsterdam’s need for an open and welcoming environment for Islam in the community. The project was designed at the suggestion of certain decision-makers of the City of Amsterdam. The building is situated in the east of Amsterdam, facing Mecca. The design of the building is based on Al-Hajar Al-Aswad, or the Black Stone, a holy Islamic relic consisting now of a collection of black Stone fragments. These fragments are then translated planometrically, resulting in an open and symbolic contemporary community complex.
