Allard Architecture, in collaboration with Aedes Real Estate and Marcel Wanders, submitted a tender for revitalization of the Tower Overhoeks, the former Shell headquarters in Amsterdam. The proposal was to transform the tower into a major international hotel including a restaurant, a skybar, gym, conference room, offices for the new School for Creative Leadership THNK and a pavilion welcoming to a new art museum in miniature designed by UN Studio.
The main architectural interventions the design team proposed for the building address the addition of two delicately positioned and materialized volumes. These two volumes respect the three entities of the tower and thus emphasize the particular architectural style of Arthur Staal. Most important to the proposal was to respect the building’s original appearance and act on its envelope as discreetly as possible.
More information on the winning proposal by Claus & Van Wageningen Architects and the future of the tower can be found here.
